Chapter Eight

The Good in Goodbye

Breathe. Just Breathe.

Bridges took another deep breath, then another, and another. For some reason, her mind had her feeling as if she’d never been on a date in her life. All morning, she’d been on the verge of hyperventilating and hadn’t been able to do anything to stop it. She’d tried talking herself in and out of every possible scenario, and none of the bad outweighed the good, so she sucked it up.

Beautiful, successful, and extremely sought-after, Bridges was accustomed to dating and dating some of the finest men known to man, but it had been years since she’d been out with another man. From the moment she’d met Marcellus, and their dating had grown serious, she’d cut herself off socially. So, it was a no brainer that the moment she pledged herself to him forever, that she’d cut off all social and emotional ties to any other men.

“You can do this.” She ran her hand over her flowing hair.

She’d gotten it styled along with her makeup done a little over an hour prior, and she looked like her religiously glamorous self. Treyvon Hampton, the running back for the New York Jets and her date for the evening, had been seated in her living room for the past ten minutes, and she still hadn’t been able to make herself do more than greet him.

Tall, dark, and handsome as ever, Treyvon was definitely the MVP of their evening and could probably have any woman he wanted, yet he’d been pursuing her relentlessly for months. As flattering as it was, all she could think about was Marcellus and the fact that she was technically cheating on him. Even though he’d obviously been cheating on her for some time now, she still felt guilty and was doing everything in her power to talk herself out of that dumb ass thought.

“He did this, not you,” she mumbled while spraying on more perfume. “You deserve to have some harmless fun.”

Bridges nodded at herself once more before grabbing her purse and heading for the front of her house. Upon entering the living room, Treyvon’s presence disarmed her even more. She’d apparently been in her room a little too long because even though she’d already seen him once when inviting him in, it felt like the first time all over again.

“Look at you.” He stood and smiled. “You were definitely worth the wait.”

Naturally, Bridges blushed and hid her face. Any man other than Marcellus paying her compliments was so hard to receive because she wasn’t quite used to it anymore.

“Thank you. You look handsome as well.”

Treyvon smiled and grabbed her hand to kiss it. “Ready?”

“I am.” Bridges allowed him to pull her from her house, take her keys, lock her door, and usher her into the passenger seat of his sports car.

It was a small, grey, and red little monster that looked like it would speed her straight to Heaven. Though Bridges was deathly afraid to get in it, she relaxed and crossed her legs at the ankle.
